Reporter's log: Cherry blossoms in full as Wuhan makes progress in the battle
2020-03-30

March 30 marks the 56th day since I came to Wuhan, and the city has moved from winter to spring. The city is witnessing zero new cases now, from thousands at the beginning of my 56 days. With the cherry blossoms in full bloom, Wuhan is returning to its good old days.

I was nervous during my first days here but now have become calm. It is because of the improving condition of the city and, more significantly, those who have done their utmost to guard the city.

Zhang Boli, pictured above and 72, has been fighting here even longer than I have. The academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and president of Tianjin University of TCM had his gallbladder excised here after working so long. He has kept a low profile when talking about his work in Wuhan."I just did what I am supposed to do," he said. I simply couldn't help but cry when I saw the old man working. How could a twenty-something like me retreat as a seventy–something is still fighting?

Chef Pan, pictured above, cooked on his own for more than 60 people at a local police station in Wuhan. For some young police staff, he is their "Uncle Pan". He said he thinks of them as his own children and wanted them to eat something good in this difficult period. He guards those who guard the city.

A 24-year-old veteran soldier stunned me. Unlike his fellows of the same age still on campus, Zhu Chunlei, pictured above, has been a veteran for eight years and drove a military van for more than 3,000 kilometers transporting relief materials. Those born after the 1990s like Zhu are emerging to carry the world on their shoulders - medics, volunteers, police and journalists.

Hu Jie, pictured, and her husband were working apart to build Leishenshan Hospital and Houshenshan Hospital respectively. People like them braved the epidemic and raced against time to save lives.

For all those coming to help, Wuhan is thankful. I came across a farewell to the last group of Guizhou medics and saw local residents, pictured above, extending their thanks and good wishes to the medics through their windows. Though separated by the window, they expect a reunion with their helpers during the next spring.

Every time, I take a look at this heroic city where I myself was a small part of the fight, I am so proud. See you next spring for the cherry blossoms, hot dry noodles and Yellow Crane Tower!
