| 赤铁矿 hematite 化学成分为三氧化二铁（Fe2O3）的矿物。含Fe 70％，是炼铁的重要矿物原料。三方晶系，晶体呈菱面体或板状。集合体常呈片状、鳞片状、肾状、鲕状、块状或土状。铁黑色、金属光泽、片状的称为镜铁矿；钢灰色、鳞片状的为云母赤铁矿；红褐色土状而光泽暗淡的称赭石。条痕均为樱红色；莫氏硬度5.5～6.5；比重4.9～5.3。分布广，内生、外生、变质作用下均可形成。常与磁铁矿一起产出。中国湖北冶铁矿为接触变质类型；河北宣化、湖南宁乡的为沉积作用下形成。前寒武纪的沉积变质类型(中国称为鞍山式铁矿)储量很大，是世界上铁矿石主要来源，俄罗斯库尔斯克、加拿大魁北克、巴西米纳斯吉拉斯、美国苏必利尔湖、澳大利亚哈默斯利等地为世界主要产地。
