| 自然保护区 natural reserve 国家为保护自然环境和自然资源，对具有代表性的不同自然地带的环境和生态系统、珍贵稀有动物自然栖息地及其他历史遗迹和重要水源地筹划出界限加以特殊保护的自然地域。自然保护区以保护自然资源为主，还须把科研、教学、旅游和生产结合起来，统一经营管理，使之成为以自然保护为主的科学实验、生产示范和旅游的基地。保护区可划分为核心区、缓冲区和实验区。核心区是原始状态保护较好的自然景观地区，是开展生态系统研究的基地。缓冲区设在核心区周围，是半开发地区，由一些演替植被组成，可结合实际需要在不破坏原有群落环境的前提下，开展一些合理利用和改造的试验。实验区可根据所在地的特点和需要，利用本地资源，生产自己特有的产品，为当地的植被恢复和建立新的人工生态系统起示范推广作用。美国于1872年首建的世界第一个国家公园（黄石公园）即为自然保护区。到20世纪20年代，世界各大洲相继建立了自然保护区的国家公园。至1991年全世界已建各类自然保护区8490个，面积达774 万平方千米，占地球土地面积的5.2％。中国于1956年在广东省肇庆市建立了以保护南亚热带季雨林为主的第一个自然保护区（鼎湖山自然保护区）。到1993年底中国已建708个自然保护区，总面积为5680万公顷，占国土面积5.54％。中国自然保护区的主要保护对象分3类：自然生态系统类 ；野生生物类；自然遗迹类。根据自然保护区的重要意义又分为4级：国家级、省（市、自治区）级、市（自治州）级和县（自治县、旗、县级市）级。中国的贵州梵净山、广东鼎湖山、四川卧龙、福建武夷山、吉林长白山、内蒙古锡林格勒草原、新疆博格达峰、湖北神农架等10处自然保护区，还加入了国际“人与生物圈计划”的自然保护区网。
