   露天开采的具有一定开采境界的采掘矿石的独立生产经营单位。露天矿开采是把覆盖在矿体上部及其周围的浮土和围岩剥去,把废石运到排土场,从敞露的矿体上直接采掘矿石。当矿体埋藏较浅或地表有露头时,应用露天开采比地下开采优越。剥去上部岩土的工作称为剥离。剥离岩土量与采出矿石量的比例称为剥采比,剥采比过大的露天矿,露天开采成本高,应改用地下开采的方法。露天矿床开拓就是自地表挖掘一系列露天沟道至露天矿场地内各个矿体,建立地面与生产台阶(在开采过程中,逐步形成的阶梯状工作面)的运输联系,从而形成露天采场到选矿厂或碎矿厂、排土场或工业广场之间的运输系统,以保证剥采工作的正常进行。根据露天矿的运输方式,分为铁路运输开拓,公路运输开拓,平硐溜井开拓,斜坡卷扬(提升)开拓及胶带运输开拓。
