洛特雷亚蒙的《玛尔佗萝之歌》(1869)，是一部有特色的散文诗。全书分为 6部分，第1唱至第6唱（这个格式是仿照但丁《神曲》的）主要内容是对人生的憎恶和诅咒，这种强烈的仇恨令人感到和另一极端即对人生的强烈的爱非常接近。《玛尔佗萝之歌》深刻地表达了人生的悲哀。洛特雷亚蒙对于丑恶的人间的诅咒，超过波德莱尔的《恶之华》的辛辣程度。《玛尔佗萝之歌》明显受《恶之华》的影响。
洛特雷亚蒙在世时是个无名之士。出版商印刷了《玛尔佗萝之歌》，因内容偏激不敢发售,曾向作者索取经济赔偿。1910年法国作家瓦莱里·拉博发现并赞扬了这部诗集，10多年以后，超现实主义文学兴起，人们把《玛尔佗萝之歌》奉为超现实主义的"圣经"。
