性质:是细胞的一种不同于坏死的死亡方式,是由基因控制的细胞自我消亡过程,是一连串精确的生化变化的结果,不像坏死是意外事件使细胞受损伤的消极结果,其发生为机体维持衡态所需,因而有积极的生物学意义。细胞凋谢开始时,染色质凝集、分块,位于核膜上,细胞质凝缩,核及细胞的外形都有卷曲,几分钟后,核断裂,细胞表面有柄状突起,最后产生有膜包裹的细胞凋谢体,随即被周围的细胞所吞噬。这与坏死细胞完全不同,后者是不成形的染色质块,膨胀的细胞器,以及混浊的线粒体。细胞凋谢的另一特征是可能有新的蛋白质合成,可能是为启动细胞凋谢所需。程序化细胞死亡(programmed cell death;PCD)概念与细胞凋亡起于相同时期,常被认为有相关或甚至等同的意义。但是,尽管两者都不同于细胞坏死,即不伴有发炎和细胞崩溃及内含物的释放,都是由基因指导的细胞自我消亡,具有明确的生物学功能。但二者不能等同起来。PCD的细胞死亡是按照一定程序发生的变化。也有核固缩和胞质缩合等细胞凋亡现象。
