   维持裂变链式反应所需的核燃料或反应堆的体积。又称中肯体积。核裂变放出2~3个中子,放出的中子可继续引起核裂变,也可能被吸收而不发生裂变,也可能逸出裂变物质。为了维持裂变链式反应,要求裂变过程得到的中子数(即后一代中子数)同引起裂变的中子数(即前一代中子数)的比值,称为中子增殖系数,k≥1。相应于k=1的核燃料或反应堆的体积就是临界体积。当不是临界体积时,不会发生持续的裂变链式反应,有利于裂变燃料的贮存;当超过临界体积,则可发生持续的裂变反应。临界体积是核裂变技术中的重要参数。临界体积的大小取决于裂变反应中的平均裂变中子数、裂变燃料的纯度以及裂变装置的类型、结构。
