水电站建筑由水工建筑物和生活区组成。水工建筑物有拦河坝、溢洪道、沉沙池、进水口、引水道、调压室、前池、压力水管、厂房、尾水道和开关站等。厂房分为主厂房和副厂房。大中型水电站的主厂房一般分三层，自上而下为发电机层、水轮机层和蜗壳、尾水管层。厂房的混凝土量80～90％位于水下，故应合理布置，充分利用空间，以减少混凝土量和开挖工程量。地下厂房要注意防潮、通风和降低噪声等问题。副厂房包括中央控制室、电缆室、充电机室、蓄电池室、储酸室、载波通信室、油系统室、压缩空气系统、厂用电间、供排水泵室、办公室和休息室等。其中，中央控制室是水电站的指挥中心，一般布置在能兼顾到发电机层和开关站的位置。中央控制室的建筑标准要求较高，室内应有空调设施和隔声处理。生活区宜选择在距水电站较近，对外交通又较便利和不受洪水威胁的地方。
