化工原理课程是化学工业技术和化学工程科学发展的必然产物。十九世纪九十年代国外高等学校相继设置化学工程系，开出的课程大都是针对不同化工行业编写各自的生产工艺学，直到二十世纪初才明确认识到各行各业通用的物理操作的共性，并于二十年代出版了第一部化工原理教科书－principles of chemical engineering，我国于上世纪二十年代创办化学工程系，并开设化工原理课程。
化工原理是一门关于化学加工过程的技术基础课，它为过程工业（包括化工、轻工、医药、食品、环境、材料、冶金等工业部门）提供科学基础，对化工及相近学科的发展起支撑作用。化工原理课程以单元操作为内容，以传递过程原理和研究方法论为主线，研究各个物理加工过程的基本规律，典型设备的设计方法，过程的操作和调节原理。化工原理课程教学包括三个环节，即：理论课教学、实验课教学和课程设计。实验课与理论课同步进行，课程设计安排在化工原理理论课之后进行。实验课程的设计思想：培养学生动手能力、观察能力、综合分析和处理问题的能力。课程设计是一个总结性的教学环节，针对化工厂中一个实际的化工单元操作，完成主体设备的工艺设计，附属设备的选型设计，主体设备总图的绘制。通过课程设计，使学生掌握化工设计的程序和方法，学会查阅资料、使用手册、选用数据和公式、合理确定工艺流程、正确进行工艺计算、用技术经济的观点评价设计结果，用文字数表图纸表达设计思想、以及严谨认真的工作态度和工作作风。
