４２式驱逐舰是极为昂贵的８２式驱逐舰的廉价版，８２式驱逐舰为早先计划中的cva-01航舰的护卫舰只，后因cva-01的计划取消，因而８２式 亦只完成一艘布里斯托号。无敌级航舰发展之初并不打算操作早期预警直升机，而４２式驱逐舰的主要任务即为以无敌级为中心的航舰战斗群提供必要的防空哨戒。４２式又称为雪菲尔级，第一艘雪菲尔号于1975年竣工，之后陆续建造了5艘４２式一型，以及4艘非常相似的４２式二型。
