喀斯特区宽阔平坦的地面，有地表水系出露。是一种基岩平原，下部有近水平的小起伏石灰岩基岩面，上面覆盖溶蚀残余红土或冲积砂砾，残丘与孤峰从平原上突起，平原边缘为山地或丘陵陡坡所限定，喀斯特山地与丘陵坡麓脚洞发育。表明它是由河流和地下水侧向为主伴随向下溶蚀，又加河流挟带砂砾机械磨蚀作用所扩大形成的平缓起伏的侵蚀溶蚀平原。1934年凯舍（a.kayser）称其为喀斯特边缘平原（karst marginplain）。在湿润热带喀斯特区，因频繁暴雨和高温，河水时常泛滥，溶蚀作用强烈，最易扩展成这种溶蚀平原，周围峰林发育，特别沿江两侧塔状喀斯特发育。平原面积可达数百平方公里，如中国广西中部柳州、来宾、黎塘、贵县一带。
