依照一定的标准、阈值、属性或功能所划分的地理系统组合或地理系统范畴。应体现出某些强调的本质特征，并依赖于4个方面的深入研究：①地理功能的判定；②地理结构的识别；③地理过程的发展；④地理质量的评价。在地理系统分类研究中，英国地理学家乔莱（r.j.chorley）于1971年将其划分为4种基本类型：①地理形态系统。单纯由地理系统各组成要素的排布、联系及结构网络去体现；②地理级联系统。按能量、物质和信息在地理系统中所经历的路径去规定；③地理过程—响应系统。要求至少有一个形态系统与一个级联系统的耦合，由此揭示出，“形态”联系到“过程”，“结构”联系到“功能”，“时间”联系到“空间”，“形式”联系到“本质”；④地理控制系统。对地理系统内部某个关键成分，以某种手段施以有目的的控制，以诱导该系统执行某种确定的方式或得到优化的结果。
