簇绒地毯起源于19世纪的美国佐治亚州。最初因其外观如同草坪，所以又称草皮(turf)织物。20世纪30～40年代，簇绒地毯由单针栽绒发展为排针栽绒。50年代又出现提花和印花的簇绒地毯，并逐渐在欧美各国普及。60年代以来，簇绒地毯以化学纤维为主要原料，幅宽达4～5m，成为机制地毯中产量最大、应用最广的品种。
簇绒地毯的主要工艺是：①材料准备，将预热定型的丙烯纤维纺织成底布以及栽绒所需的各种化学纤维纱线。②栽绒定型，即以排针机械引带化学纤维纱线在丙烯纤维底布上整排、高速地栽绒，在毯面上形成整齐而又密集的圈绒或割绒。③在毯背面涂刮合成胶乳或聚酯类胶粘剂，并将底布和栽绒粘成牢固的整体。④后整理工艺，包括以剪绒机平整毯面、毯面印花、毯背粘贴丁苯胶或聚胺酯等泡沫塑料背衬或黄麻布背衬，以蒸汽蓬松并整理毯面等。
在机制地毯中，簇绒地毯有类似手工栽绒地毯的效果，弹性和牢度较好。簇绒地毯还可以应用印花、提花工艺,不仅生产效率高，而且成本比机织提花地毯低,所以广泛用于车船、住宅等室内地面的铺设。
