| 发电机 electrical generator 将机械能转变为电能的电机。通常由汽轮机、水轮机或内燃机驱动。发电机分直流发电机和交流发电机两大类，后者又可分为同步发电机和异步发电机。现代电厂中最常用的是同步发电机。它由直流电流励磁，既能提供有功功率，也能提供无功功率，可满足各种负载的需要。异步发电机没有独立的励磁绕组，其结构简单，操作方便，但不能向负载提供无功功率。因此，异步发电机运行时必须与其他同步发电机并联，或并接相当数量的电容器。直流发电机有换向器，结构复杂，价格较贵，易出故障，维修困难效率也不如交流发电机。故自20世纪50年代以后，直流发电机逐渐为交流电源经功率半导体整流获得的直流电所取代。
汽轮发电机是与汽轮机配套的发电机 。其转速通常为3000转／分（频率为50赫）或3600转／分（频率为60赫）。高速汽轮发电机为了减少因离心力而产生的机械应力以及降低风磨耗，转子直径一般较小，长度较大（即细长转子）。这种细长转子使大型高速汽轮发电机的转子尺寸受到限制。20世纪70年代以后，汽轮发电机的最大容量达130～150万千瓦。
水轮发电机由水轮机驱动。它的转子短粗，机组的起动、并网所需时间较短，运行调度灵活，除一般发电外，特别宜于作为调峰机组和事故备用机组。水轮发电机组的最大容量已达70万千瓦。 柴油发电机由内燃机驱动。它起动迅速，操作方便，但发电成本高，主要用作应急备用电源，或在大电网没有达到的地区和流动电站使用。容量多在几千瓦至几千千瓦之间。柴油机轴上输出的转矩呈周期性脉动，须防止共振和断轴事故。 |
