４２式驱逐舰是极为昂贵的８２式驱逐舰的廉价版，８２式驱逐舰为早先计划中的cva-01航舰的护卫舰只，后因cva-01的计划取消，因而８２式 亦只完成一艘布里斯托号。无敌级航舰发展之初并不打算操作早期预警直升机，而４２式驱逐舰的主要任务即为以无敌级为中心的航舰战斗群提供必要的防空哨戒。４２式又称为雪菲尔级，第一艘雪菲尔号于1975年竣工，之后陆续建造了5艘４２式一型，以及4艘非常相似的４２式二型。
４２式三型与２２式巡防舰二/三型一样，将舰体延长以改进耐海性、续航能力与住舱的标准。值得注意是，４２式三型由于舰体长度加长使得舰体结构强度不足，因而加装了显著的舰体舷底板及衬底，至于武装则与一/二型没有任何改变，不过舰上的感测系统皆经过相当的改善。４２式三型4艘皆在1982年至1985年间就役，其舰体操作年限估计为22年。
