水岩  端砚名坑之一。唐初开采,清道光十三年开坑时,岩洞塌方,自此便封坑不再开采,直至1972年才重新开坑采石。该坑自晚唐开始,采坑砚石所制之砚被列为贡品,故又称皇岩,清康熙后改称老坑。水岩砚石属泥质、硅质绢云母板岩,为变余泥质结构、粉砂质结构、隐晶质结构,平行构造。矿物成分为泥质、绢云母及硅质胶结而成,并含少量氢氧化铁,以及石英、白云母,电气石、锆石和绿泥石。水岩砚石呈紫蓝色,质地温软、幼嫩、细腻、滋润、致密、坚实,“体重而轻”、“质刚而柔”。具有“呵气研墨”、“贮水不耗”、发墨不损笔毫的特点,“叩之无声”、“磨墨亦无声”。水岩砚石的开采异常艰巨、复杂。水岩砚石在端砚名坑中,开采历史最长,石质最好,石品花式最多,研墨也最均匀,为世之珍品。
