| 茂名市 位于中国广东省西南部，鉴江中游东侧。面积5793平方千米 (市区487平方千米)，人口295.06万 (市区52.57万)。原为茂名县地。1958年析其南部地区设茂名市，属湛江地区。1983年撤销湛江地区，将4个县划归茂名市 。今只辖电白县、信宜县2县。处粤西山地南麓，台地 、平原为主 。有梅江河、白沙河 、东江等河流 。多水库 。属南亚热带海洋性季风气候，年均降水1806毫米，年均温23.2℃。河茂铁路与黎湛铁路相接 ， 三茂铁路将成为茂名市与外联系的主脉 。公路总里程4900多千米，干线通广州、湛江等地。部分河流可通航。已建立香蕉、荔枝、柑橙 、胡椒、甘蔗 、蚕桑 、南药、蔬菜、对虾等一批商品基地。水稻单产历来居全国前茅。是中国新兴的石油工业城市 。主要矿藏有高岭土 、油页岩 、花岗岩、独居石、锆英石 、甲长石 、玉石 、石灰石和磷矿石。其中油页岩储量70亿吨，居全国首位。另外还有电力、建材、冶金、机械等部门。特产有果、菠萝蜜。 |
