中华人民共和国建立后，1952～1985年在造纸工业基本建设上投资约51亿元，建成了一批大中型造纸厂。1985年底，造纸工业拥有企业4600多个，职工人数58.4万人；机制纸和纸板产量911万吨,比1949年增长约82倍，平均每年递增13.5％；造纸工业总产值达107.7亿元,在全部工业总产值中占1.3％;机制纸的品种已由50年代初的30种左右，发展到 500种左右。纸张品种按大类可分为以下五类：①文化出版用纸，如新闻纸、铜版纸、字典纸等。②工业用纸，如各种绝缘纸、油毡纸、过滤纸和其他专用纸。③包装用纸和纸版，如水泥袋纸、防锈纸以及复合包装纸等。④各种仪表记录纸和海图纸。⑤生活用纸，如面巾纸、餐巾纸、卫生纸、涂塑纸等。随着科学技术的发展，更新的纸张品种还会不断创新和发展。
