铸造生产中使液态金属成为固态铸件的容器。容器的内部称型腔，其轮廓相当于所制铸件的外形。铸型要承受液态金属的高温作用和冲刷，所以必须具有相应的耐火度和足够的强度；在金属凝固成形后，还应较容易地与铸件脱离。为适应这些要求，砂型铸造一般用耐火度高的硅砂、锆英砂等铸造砂配以型砂粘结剂及其他辅加材料混制成型砂，来做铸型的材料。某些特种铸造方法也有用耐火粘土、石墨或铸铁等作为铸型的材料。铸型按所用材料不同可分为砂型、金属型、陶瓷型、泥型、石墨型等。按使用次数可分为一次性型、半永久型、永久型。为提高铸型的耐火能力并使铸件表面光洁，型腔表面有时要刷上特别配制的耐火涂料。普通砂型铸造的铸型为了承受金属液浇注时的冲击压力，通常要用铁或钢做的金属箱套在外面，以免铸型破裂，这种金属箱称为砂箱。高压造型发明后，由于砂型强度增加，做小铸件时，可以不用砂箱，称为无箱铸型。一个完整的铸型，通常由两个"半型"组成，型腔内可放置型芯，还要有引入金属液的通道，即浇注系统，以及为铸件金属补缩所需要的冒口空腔。两个半型合拢、紧固，就成为可以浇注金属液的铸型。铸型也可以做成整体的，例如熔模铸型（见熔模铸造）。铸型的优劣是影响铸件外观质量的主要因素。铸件几何形状和尺寸的精确度，表面粗糙度和其他表面缺陷都同铸型质量有密切关系。因而，选择什么样的铸型来生产所需铸件，是在选择造型工艺时首先要考虑的问题。
