在我国南海的辽阔海域尤其是北部湾渔场,生长着一种南海特有的底层鱼类——红鱼。它个体大,肉质厚,味道好,是南海重要经济鱼类之一,每逢渔汛特别是春汛和秋汛,渔民都能捕到较多红鱼供应市场。

  红鱼,学名叫红鳍笛鲷,又名红鱼曹鱼,在分类学上属笛鲷科笛鲷属。这种鱼体呈椭圆形,稍侧扁,一般体长20厘米~40厘米以上,体重2公斤~3公斤左右。头较大,体披中大栉鳞,侧线完全与背缘平行,眼间隔宽而突起,全身鲜红色,故得红鱼之俗名。

  红鱼喜欢生活在水深50米~90米处,底质为泥或沙泥的海区,若无气候突变,一般每年10月~11月间开始怀卵,次年四五月底产卵。它为肉食性鱼类,个体细小的红三鱼、银米鱼等便是它们经常的食物。渔民根据红鱼的游动习性和食性捕捉红鱼。捕捉主要采取两种捕捞方法,一是用机动渔轮和较大型的渔船设置大型底拖网捕捞;二是制造红鱼钓船,采用延绳钓的“钓鱼”办法来捕获。

  红鱼由于掠食小型鱼类长肥了自己,因而生得体健身壮,所以它一般可活四五年,长寿者可达7年以上。而其个体长得也较大,肉厚刺少,肉质鲜美,蛋白质含量高,营养丰富,因而被列为优质海产鱼类,是著名的海鲜美食。海南儋州出产的红鱼干和临高出产的红鱼筒是海南的著名特产之一。
