铸造生产中经过处理基本上恢复了使用性能可以回用的旧砂。砂型铸造时，每生产1吨铸件就会产生6～15吨用过的旧砂。旧砂的利用基本上有两种方式，即旧砂回用和旧砂再生。铸型在浇注以后，如果大部分型砂中的粘结剂没有发生不可逆的变化，则只要除掉杂质，经过吸灰冷却和重新混制就可恢复型砂原有的性能，这种处理方式称为旧砂回用，一般只有粘土粘结的型砂才能回用。用化学方式硬化的砂型及型芯（如用油砂、水玻璃砂和各种树脂砂制成的砂型及型芯），其粘结剂的硬化反应是不可逆的，这种情况下的旧砂不能简单地回用，需要把砂粒表面已失效的粘结剂膜脱除，使其基本上恢复原砂的性能，这种处理方式称为旧砂再生。粘土砂型中贴近铸件表面的型砂，经高温作用后粘土变成了死粘土，不能再恢复粘结能力。这样的粘土砂也须经再生处理才能回用。旧砂再生有湿法、干法和热法 3种方法。湿法再生对于粘结剂膜能溶于水的旧砂比较有效，一般用于水玻璃砂。采用这种方法时设备庞大复杂，而且再生后的砂子需要干燥冷却，耗能多，效率低，废水排放量大。干法再生适用于粘结剂膜比较脆的旧砂，设备较简单，多用于再生树脂砂和粘土砂。热法再生须将旧砂加热到800℃以上，将失效的粘结剂烧掉,对于无机粘结剂效果很差，较适用于树脂砂。这种方法耗能多，设备费用高，除壳型砂外一般很少采用。
