印章 也称“图章”。古称“鉩”，后作“玺”。秦统一六国，皇帝的印信称“玺”，官、私所用均改称“印”。至汉代，官印中始有“章”和“印章”之称。唐以后，皇帝所用印或称“宝”，官、私所用印别有“记”、“朱记”、“关防”、“图章”和“花押”等名称。文字形制随时代而变化，风格各有特点。先秦及秦、汉的印章多用作封发物体、简犊之用，把印盖于封泥之上，以防私拆，并作信验，而官印又是权力的象征。后简牍易为纸帛，封泥之用渐废，印章改用朱色钤盖；除日常应用外，又多用于书画题识，遂成为中国特有的一种艺术品。古代多用铜、银、金、玉、琉璃等为印章，后有牙、骨、水晶等；元以后石章盛行。
