    化学组成为钠柱石 Na4〔AlSi3O8〕(Cl,OH)和钙柱石Ca4〔Al2SiO8〕3(CO3,SO4)完全类质同象系列的一族架状结构硅酸盐矿物的总称。属似方长石矿物。按端员组分的分子百分含量可划分为:钠柱石、针柱石 、中柱石和钙柱石4个矿物种,但各家划分标准不一。天然产出的方柱石多具Ca/(Ca+Na)=0.2~0.9范围内的中间成分,并通称为普通方柱石;任一端员组分含量超过80%的都甚少见。晶体属四方晶系,呈四方柱和四方双锥的聚形。集合体呈粒状、不规则柱状或致密块状。无色及白、蓝灰、黄至红褐等色,海蓝色者称海蓝柱石。玻璃光泽。柱面解理中等和不完全。莫氏硬度5~6。比重2.50~2.78,随钙含量增加而增大。产于矽卡岩中,也见于钙质岩石的区域变质岩中。在火山岩的气孔中可见到晶簇状方柱石。色泽美丽者可作宝石。
