计量单位又称测量单位。通常指一个有严密科学定义的特定的量，用于定量地表示各同类量的大小，以使任何两个具体的同类量之间可从数值上进行比较。在仅涉及长度、体积(容量、容积)和质量(重量)三个量的情况下，曾称度量衡单位。布匹的长短、房屋的高低、路程的远近等同类量，均可用一个数字乘以计量单位米(或由米派生出来的千米、厘米、毫米等)来表示其大小。计量单位的确定是任何量的表述的前提。描述商品数量和技术特性，一般都要用计量单位。在标注商品价格和进行贸易结算时，明确计量单位与明确货币单位同等重要。 计量单位本质上是约定选用的，带有任意性，因而造成了历史上有关计量单位的混乱:一是对同一个量选用了许多不同的计量单位，如长度的单位有市尺、英尺……等等;二是对每个单位的倍数和分数单位采用了不同的进位制度，有十进位、十二进位、六十进位……等等;三是很少考虑由量与量之间的联系所决定的单位与单位之间的联系，使得由全部单位构成的总体变成了缺乏逻辑联系的庞杂混合体，难记又难用。这种混乱对于经济和科技不发达的古代社会已属不便，而对于商品经济发达、科技交流频繁的近代和现代社会就更不适应了。为了消除上述混乱.100多年以来，许多科学家和国际组织为建立世界通用的单位制持续不断地进行着工作建立单位制的具体做法是:独立地选定某几个量的单位(称基本单位)，其他量的单位(称导出单位)则利用上述单位并根据量与量之间的规律性联系逐个地推导出来;规定每个单位的名称和符号;规定倍数和分数单位的进位制，等等。这样构成的全部单位的总体及一套有关规则，就是一种单位制。1875年成立的米制公约组织的宗旨，是要在全世界推广米制计量单位，取代其他各种计量单位，以促进国际贸易和科技交流。目前，米制的现代形式—国际单位制(SI)已被世界各国普遍接受，并已在科技书刊、教材和贸易文件中普遍采用。但是，在经济贸易活动中，也还有少量其他单位，主要是英制单位在沿用着。对这些单位一定要弄清其与Sl单位的换算关系，应用时还要注意有些英制单位在不同的国家和地区，往往有名称相同而实际大小不同的情况。
