      化学组成为Mg2[(B2O4)(OH)](OH)、晶体属单斜晶系的硼酸盐矿物。晶体呈纤维状、柱状或板状,并可形成聚片双晶。集合体通常呈纤维状,块状。白色、灰白色微带黄。纤维状硼镁石带丝绢光泽,块状的光泽暗淡。柱面解理完全。摩斯硬度3~4,比重2.62~2.75。硼镁石主要产于镁质夕卡岩中,与磁铁矿、硼镁铁矿等共生。中国东北风城、宽甸等很多镁质夕卡岩矿床中常有硼镁石产出。在沉积的硼矿床中,也可由其他的含水硼酸盐矿物经脱水转变而成。是主要的工业硼矿物之一。
