1. 不同制造目标相对独立发展
从制造目标来说，RPM主要用于①快速概念设计原型制造，②快速模具原型制造，③快速功能测试原型制造及④快速功能零件制造。
由于快速概念型制造和快速模个型制造的巨大市场和技术可行性，将来这两个方面将是研究和商品化的重点。由于彼此特点有较大差距，两者将呈相对独立发展的态势。快速测试型制造由于使用范围的限制和特点不够鲜明，本身不会形成独立流派，将附属于快速概念型制造。快速功能零件制造将是发展的一个重要方向，但技术难度很大在今后的很长一段时间内，仍将局限于研究领域。
2. 向大型制造与微型制造进军
分析各大公司的产品系列，可以发现，原型的制造尺寸呈增大的趋势。由于大型模具的制造难度和RPM在模具制造方面的优势，可以预测将来的RPM市场将有一定比例为大型原型制造所占据。与此成鲜明对比的将是RPM向地领域的进军，SL的一个重要发展方向是微米印刷（Microlithography），以制造微米零件（Microscale Parts）。日本Nagoya University在这方面领先。激光光斑可达5μm，成形时原型不动，激光束通过透明板精密聚焦在被成形的原型上。X-Y扫描全停位精度为0.00025mm，Z向停位精度为0.001mm，可制造5μm×5μm×3μm零件如静脉阀、集成电路零件等。
