    一套含有煤层或煤线的沉积岩系。又称煤系、含煤沉积或含煤建造。构成含煤岩系的沉积岩大都呈灰、灰绿、灰黑和黑色,主要是各种粒度的砂岩以及粉砂岩、泥岩、灰质泥岩和煤组成,砾岩、粘土岩和石灰岩也常见,有时也见到铝质岩、油页岩、硅质岩和火山碎屑岩等。含煤岩系一般富含动、植物化石。有时还可见到多种碳酸盐结核、硫铁矿结核以及硅质结核等。含煤岩系的形成时代从古生代(主要是晚古生代)至第三纪。含煤岩系在世界各大洲的许多地方都有发现。含煤岩系的变化,主要受控于它形成时的古构造和古地理环境。不同时代、不同地区的含煤岩系,其特征不同。含煤岩系的厚度由几米至几十米甚至上万米,含煤层数由一至一二百层不等,煤层厚度相差也极大,有的厚度超过100米。
