生活于林地、沟谷和耕地四周。性情温和。以奇臭的腺体分泌物作为防卫武器。多在黄昏活动，偶见于白天。挖洞而居、用草叶作为垫巢材料。巢域为10.4公顷左右。杂食性，秋、冬季以野果、小型哺乳类及谷物为食，而春、夏季多以昆虫和谷物等为主:偶吃小鸟、鸟卵、蛇、蛙等。交配季节一雄多雌，2-3月交尾，妊娠期62天。每胎2-10仔，5-6仔居多。初生仔兽与母兽一起度过同年冬天。
本种鼬可能是森林狂犬病毒的宿主动物。
