英国1938年完工的“皇家方舟”号航母把飞行甲板作为强力甲板，承受波浪作用于舰体的力，飞行甲板与强力纵梁牢固连接，纵隔壁从飞行甲板一直延伸到舰体下部，形成一个整体结构，把机库包在里面，所以称之为“封闭式机库”。后来，英国更在1941年完工的“光辉”级航母的飞行甲板上加铺了76mm厚的装甲。在二战的生死搏斗中，这种结构的机库经受了考验。现已成为航母的标准机库形式。只有西班牙的“阿斯图里亚斯亲王”号仍采用开放式机库。
