学校始建于1973年，是北京轻型汽车有限公司的厂办技校，直接面向本公司培养生产所需的各类技术工人。
学校在公司所属北京厂区和顺义厂区分别设立分校，就近招生和分配。专业设置：机加工、钳工、电气维修、汽车装配、车身制造、汽车维修、汽车制造、数控机床加工。学校建筑面积2500平方米，设有计算机、电工等实验室和钳工、车工实习车间，目前在校学生近300名，教职工55人，其中教师31名，具有大专以上学历和中级以上职称者占80％以上。
学校根据劳动部教学大纲和汽车生产特点组织教学，注重实际技能培养，在校期间理论学习和生产实习时间各占50％，学生毕业时掌握一门专业技能，经技术等级考核取得《中华人民共和国工人技术等级证书》，为学生就业上岗创造良好的条件。学校招生实行定向培养，学生完成学业取得双证（毕业证和技术等级证）、身体健康者，由北京轻型汽车有限公司录用。
学生在校期间享受助学金待遇，实习期间由学校提供劳动保护用品。为鼓励学生刻苦学习，学校对学习成绩特别优秀的学生实行减免学费制度，学生毕业后根据公司工作需要，由学校推荐和组织优秀毕业生报考成人高等院校，学成后回厂工作，享受大专毕业生待遇。96年学校推荐7名优秀生免试到成人高校学习，97年又组织30多名毕业生报考机械部高等院校，实行委托代培，受到学生及家长的普遍欢迎。
