    一种吲哚衍生物,其分子式为 C10H12N2O。它普遍存在于动植物组织中。1948年R.拉帕波特首先从牛血清的提取物中分离出纯品。 5-羟色胺能与酸作用生成结晶盐,其盐酸盐溶点167~168℃;苦味酸盐熔点185~189℃。
  
  5-羟色胺在脑组织中的浓度较高,它是调节神经活动的一种重要物质。有些肌体组织当受到某些药物作用时,可以释放出5-羟色胺,例如一个利血平分子可以使受作用的组织释放出几百个5-羟色胺分子,因而产生利血平的一系列生理作用。
