为禾本科植物芒的茎。
【植物形态】
芒(《本草拾遗》)，又名：杜荣(《尔雅》)，笆芒(《太平寰宇记》)，笆茅(《纲目》)，度芸、苫房草、创高草、白尖草。 多年生草本，高1～2米.秆粗壮，无毛，或在花序以下疏生柔毛。叶线形，长25～60厘米，宽6～15毫米，下面疏生柔毛和白粉，边缘有前倾尖锐小锯齿；叶鞘圆筒形，鞘口具密生的长白毛；叶舌为钝圆三角形，先端具小纤毛。圆锥花序伞房状直立，长10～30厘米，主轴长不及花序一半，每节具一短柄和一长柄小穗，小穗柄无毛，顶端膨大，长柄向外开展，长4毫米，短柄长约1毫米；小穗披针形，长约5～6毫米，每1小穗基部均具有一圈白色或黄褐色的丝状毛，毛约与小穗等长；第1颖片先端渐尖，有脉3条，背面光而无毛，边缘上部粗糙；第2颖片舟形，先端渐尖，腹面边缘上部具白色纤毛，背面无毛；第一外稃长圆状披针形，先端钝，比颖略短，白色，薄膜质，背面及腹面的边缘均有纤毛；第二外稃较狭，长约为颖片的2／3，薄膜质，白色，有纤毛，顶端具1芒，芒长8～10毫米，膝曲，芒柱稍扭曲；内稃微小，先端不规则地齿裂。花、果期7～11月。 生山坡或荒芜田野中。全国大部地区均有分布。 本植物的根(芒根)亦供药用，另详专条。
【化学成分】
茎含有抗癌作用(艾氏癌和肉窟-180)的多糖成分，主由戊糖和己糖组成。茎、叶中尚分离出苜蓿素。花穗含洋李甙、芒花甙。
【性味】
《本草拾遗》："味甘，平，无毒。"
【功用主治】
①《本草拾遗》："主人畜为虎狼等伤，恐毒入肉者，取茎杂葛根浓煮服之，亦取汁。" ②《纲目》："煮汁服，散血。" ③《动植物民间药》："利尿，解热，解毒。治风邪。"
【用法与用量】
内服：煎汤，0.8～1.5钱。
