化学组成为 FeO（OH）、晶体属正交（斜方）晶系并结晶成 α相的氢氧化物矿物。与纤铁矿、四方纤铁矿(akaganeite)和六方纤铁矿（feroxyhyte）成同质多象。为纪念著名德国诗人J.W.歌德 (J.W.von G╂the)而命名。晶体呈鳞片状、柱状或针状，但罕见，通常呈具同心层状和放射纤维状构造的肾状、钟乳状以及块状、土状集合体产出。块状等呈细分散状态的针铁矿常含吸附水，称为水针铁矿。针铁矿颜色黄褐至暗褐;条痕褐黄色,金刚光泽至暗淡，纤维状或鳞片状的具丝绢光泽。晶体具一个方向的完全解理。摩斯硬度5～5.5，比重4.37，含杂质者可低至3.3。针铁矿形成于氧化条件下,是含低价铁矿物风化的典型产物，也直接由无机和生物沉淀而形成于湖沼和泉水中，也见于大洋底的锰结核中。它是褐铁矿的最主要组分，分布广但很少大量富集，仅在少数产地可构成重要的铁矿，如法国洛林沿法德边界的所谓云煌岩矿等。针铁矿是次要的炼铁原料。
