一定大地构造单元里在一定构造阶段中形成的具有特征性的构造- 地层组合。一个构造层包括一套有代表性的某些沉积建造组合或沉积-火山建造组合,在构造上具有典型的褶皱-断裂组合形式,而且常伴有特征性的岩浆岩系列。各构造层之间的分界通常是角度不整合或平行不整合（见不整合）。
大的构造层，可分为若干亚构造层，代表大的构造演化阶段中某一较小的构造演化阶段形成的构造- 地层组合。如一级大地构造单元地台和地槽有相应的地台构造层和地槽构造层。地台构造层又分为基底或变质基底构造层和盖层构造层，盖层构造层还包括一些亚构造层，例如中国华北地台的盖层构造层可分为中上元古界- 下古生界（亚）构造层、上古生界- 三叠系（亚）构造层等。
对构造层中沉积建造、构造形式和岩浆活动的研究，有助于确定研究地区大地构造属性及其演化。构造层中构造的样式、方位和强度是分析构造作用性质和构造应力场的基本依据。根据地层组合中各种岩石建造及其厚度和变化，可以恢复各时期的古地理以及升降运动的强度、幅度和差异性。
