向秀(约227~272)

    中国魏晋时期玄学家。字子期。河内怀(今河南武陟)人。主要活动时期为魏末晋初。向秀与嵇康、阮籍、山涛、王戎、阮咸、刘伶并称为竹林七贤。向秀早年淡于仕途,有隐居之志。嵇康被司马昭杀害后,为避祸计,不得已而出仕,先后任散骑侍郎、黄门侍郎 、散骑常侍等职 。主要著作有《庄子注》,但全作已佚,少量佚文保存在张湛《列子注》、陶弘景《养生延命录》、陆德明《经典释文》、李善《文选注》等著作中。向秀还著有《周易注》,该书序纵切面亦佚,唐李鼎祚《周易集解》中有部分佚文,清马国翰《玉函山房辑佚书》中有辑本。又有《难养生论》一篇,存《嵇康集》中;《思旧赋》一篇存《文选》和《晋书》本传中。清严可均辑《全晋文》卷72,录有上述二文。由于著作大都佚失,很难窥见其思想全貌。向秀合“自然”与“名教”为一的思想对以后郭象宣传“名教”即“自然”的思想有所启发。
