长江支流。湖北省境内长度仅次于清江和河床海拔最低的河流。古名夏水，曾是长江的分支河流。发源于荆门市西北部,经江陵、沙市、监利3县市，至洪湖市新滩口入长江,全长358公里。沿线串连长湖、三湖、白露湖、洪湖、大沙湖等湖泊，联络数以百计的大、小河渠、溪沟，干支流总长达3494公里，流域面积1.01万平方公里。河流发育在四湖洼地中，河床出长湖时为海拔28米，入江口则为15米。河道迂回曲折，一般宽约百米。20世纪50年代以来经截弯取直,成为全长184.5公里的四湖总干渠，内荆河分成彼此不相连的河段。1949年以前流域内通航河道长3000余公里，是江汉平原水网运输的主要组成部分。现与四湖总干渠共同构成四湖航线；具排渍、防涝、灌溉、航运等效益。
