1、 CAD/CAM技术应用状况
汽车工业代表着一个国家机械制造业发展的水平，一直是CAD/CAM技术应用的先锋和大户。下面就以汽车工业为例，说明国内外机械CAD/CAM技术的应用状况。
国际上，美国福特汽车公司在CAD/CAM技术方面处于领先地位。早在80年代初，福特公司就着手CAD/CAM系统的规划，建成了以工作站为主体的环形网络系统；1985年已经有一半以上的产品设计工作使用图形终端实现；1986年新开发的TAURUS和SABLE轿车，大约70%的外板件采用CAD/CAM;90年代初全面实行产品开发的CAD/CAM,应用率可达100%。福特公司1990年工作站已达2000台，以FGS工作站（约占70%）和CV工作台（约占18%）为主，其应用软件主要为自行开发的PDGS和CAD/CAM。1993年以后，福特汽车公司提出了C3P(CAD/CAE/CAM/PDM)概念，并决定今后将采用I-DEAS软件作为其主流核心软件。
日本三菱汽车公司1960年从冲模的NC数控加工着手，以CAD/CAE/CAM为动力，对从设计到制作的各项工程踏踏实实地进行了改革，至今，已形成了从车型款式设计到车身组装的新车型开发的完整的CAD/CAE/CAM系统。
法国雷诺汽车公司应用Euclid软件作为CAD/CAM的主导软件，目前已有95%的设计工作量用该软件完成，并开发出很多适合汽车工业需求的模块，如用于干涉检查的Megavision,用于钣金成形分析的OPTRIS等。
德国各大汽车公司普遍采用CATIA作为其CAD/CAM系统的主导软件。1994年，德国大众集团决定用CATIA和Pro/Engineer作为其将来开发新车型的主导CAD系统。
我国的CAD/CAM工作始于70年代，发展迅速，已取得了良好的经济效益。少数大型企业，如一汽、二汽等，已建立起比较完整的CAD/CAM系统，其应用水平也接近国际先进水平。许多中小企业应用CAD/CAM技术在保证产品质量、提高劳动率等方面也取得了显著的经济效益。但是总的说来，国内在CAD/CAM技术应用的深度和广度方面与国外先进水平相比还有很大差距。随着社会主义市场经济的发展，国有企业需要对传统的产品结构、生产设备和管理模式进行改造，以提高企业的活力和适应市场的应变能力，而采用CAD/CAM技术被认为是唯一的出路。
