贾岛月夜乘空闲骑着瘦驴去长安城郊外拜访一个叫李凝的朋友的隐居之处拜访,可是没有见着。美好的情境却激发了他的创作灵感,他即兴写了一首诗《题李凝幽居》,并把它留了下来.贾岛后来又去李凝,吟出诗句:“鸟宿池边树,僧推月下门。”贾岛骑驴吟诗,至“僧敲月下门”一句时,不知是“推”好还是“敲”妙,在驴背上苦苦思索,两手做“推敲”状，，竟不知对面京兆尹韩愈的车队正浩荡而来，一时躲闪不及，撞了进去，被卫兵拿下。韩愈是当时的诗坛领袖，爱才如命。当他得知眼前这位书生原是诗人，因苦吟“推”“敲”而不定时，便诗兴大发。韩愈苦思良久，对贾岛说：“我看还是‘敲’比‘推’好。”贾岛忙跪地谢恩。于是两人成了好朋友，贾岛从此在长安诗坛有了名气，可以和上层人士来来往往了。
