      高速荷电粒子在介质中穿行时,如果粒子速度大于介质中的光速,就会产生一种特殊辐射,它具有明显的方向性和强偏振等特点。1934年,苏联物理学家切连科夫首先在液体介质中发现这种辐射,因而得名。这是一种电磁"冲击波"现象。作匀速直线运动的带电粒子,当其速度大于介质中的光速时,它所辐射的电磁波将集中在粒子后方一个圆锥形区域中。粒子正好位于圆锥的顶点。如图所示,箭头所指即为辐射传播的方向,它与粒子运动方向之间的夹角θc.称为切连科夫角。由图可知:,式中u为辐射在介质中传播的速率,v为荷电粒子速率,c为真空中光速,n为介质折射率。若v=βc,则cosθc=1/nβ。显然β有个阈值,仅当β >1/n时,才有切连科夫辐射产生。切连科夫效应在高能天体物理等领域中得到日益广泛的应用。
