化学重元素111是德国重离子研究中心西尔古德·霍夫曼教授领导的国际科研小组在1994年首先发现和证实的。该元素放射性强，半衰期为千分之一点五秒。
2003年，国际化学联合会正式承认了该研究中心首先发现了化学元素111，并在2004年接受了将其命名为rg的建议。在物理学家伦琴发现伦琴射线111年之际，位于德国达姆斯施塔特的重离子研究中心举行仪式，正式将化学元素111命名为“伦”。
