开始于十八世纪中期的英国工业革命导致社会、思想和人类文明的巨大进步，对建筑产生了深远的影响。工业革命是社会生产从手工工场向大机器工业的过渡，是生产技术的根本变革，同时又是一场剧烈的社会关系的变革。一方面是生产方式和建造工艺的发展，另一方面是不断涌现的新材料、新设备和新技术，为近代建筑的发展开辟了广阔的前途。正是应用了这些新的技术可能性，突破了传统建筑高度与跨度的局限，建筑在平面与空间的设计上有了较大的自由度，同时影响到建筑形式的变化。这其中尤其以钢铁、混凝土和玻璃在建筑上的广泛应用最为突出。
