| 祖母绿 emerald 含铬的翠绿色绿柱石。化学组成为Be3Al2[Si6O18]。六方晶系，晶体呈六方柱状，柱面有纵向条纹。玻璃光泽，硬度7.5。性质稳定，不易受腐蚀 。是一种贵重宝石，以其透明的绿色为主要鉴定特征。其颜色的鲜艳程度和亮度主要取决于氧化铬和氧化铁的含量。含氧化铁愈多，则颜色变为深暗，质量下降。世界90％的优质祖母绿产于哥伦比亚，碧绿清澈，晶莹凝透，以稍带蓝色的翠绿色质量最佳，和翡翠一样是宝石中的珍品。在宝石中可以见到气液固三相包体，是哥伦比亚祖母绿的特点。其次产于俄罗斯乌拉尔山脉者称乌拉尔祖母绿，又称西伯利亚祖母绿，颜色稍带黄褐，因其中多含有阳起石和黑云母等细小包体。产于巴西者称巴西祖母绿，呈淡黄绿或绿色，透明度差，质量较低。非洲坦桑尼亚、津巴布韦亦产祖母绿。
