在编制卡片目录时利用通用款目印刷卡片制作其他款目的编目方法。手工编目早期，要为每种图书抄写几张甚至十几张款目卡片。为节省人力，编目人员常对主要款目作详细著录，其余款目则采取简化形式。以后改用印刷方法(如油印、铅印等)复制款目卡片，这样就可以产生一批著录正文完全相同的款目卡片 (称作单元卡片)。根据需要在这些单元卡片上添加不同的标目,即可制成各种款目。集中编目出现以后，由集中编目机构发行的印刷卡片，可被图书馆作为单元卡片使用。下图为使用单元卡片的一个实例。
