   南美洲东南海岸的河口湾。介于阿根廷和乌拉圭两国之间,由巴拉那河与乌拉圭河汇注而成,向东南流入大西洋。自两河汇流点至圣安东尼奥角和埃斯特角之间的河口线,全长(直线距离)290千米。因近代下沉作用,河口呈世型喇叭状三角港。水面宽广,面积达3.5万平方千米,河口线处宽223千米,为世界上最宽的河口之一。流域面积13.56万平方千米,实际流域面积(包括两大源流)为323万平方千米。年平均流量2.35万立方米/秒。
   由于两大源流巴拉那河和乌拉圭河水量充沛,富含泥沙,使拉普拉塔河泥沙淤积量每年可达600万立方米,形成众多沙洲和浅滩。河床较浅,至河口线附近渐加深至18米。水位变化受支流的影响较小,受海潮和风向较大。海潮可沿河上溯至两大源流下游;在布宜诺斯艾利斯附近,平均潮差0.79米,最大潮差可达5.24米。每刮西南风时,南岸河水低落,北岸水位上升;而刮东南风时,南岸低洼处常遭淹没。河岸较为曲折,多港湾和岬角。北岸地势高。
