Bos grunniens

   高寒地区特有牛种。主产中国青藏高原海拔3000米以上地区。耐粗饲,耐劳,善走陡坡险路、雪山沼泽,能游渡江河激流,有高原之舟之称。牦牛乳、肉为高寒地区的主要食品 ,绒是一种优质毛纺原料 ,毛是编织帐篷和衣衬的材料,尾毛供制髯口、假发等,并供应国际市场。牦牛系中国古羌人在藏北高原羌塘地区驯化野牦牛而来。
   牦牛头大额宽、耳小脸短,角粗,颈短无垂皮,胸深而丰满,后躯短而狭,尾短、着生低 、四肢短矮结实,蹄小且坚,体型粗壮紧凑,遍体长毛,状似围裙,尾毛帚状,长达45~60厘米。肺大、心重,气管软骨环狭窄。入冬后被毛间丛生绒毛,夏季绒毛自动脱落,汗腺不发达。反应和行动敏捷,嗅觉尤为灵敏。采食能力强。母牦牛每年 6~10月为发情配种季节,发情周期约20天,发情持续期12~36小时,妊娠255天左右 。公牦牛在配种季节进入母牦牛群 ,过后即自动离群。

   中国的牦牛有两个生态类型:一为青藏高原型,地方品种有青龙牦牛和西藏高山牦牛。另一为横断高山型,地方品种有青海高原牦牛、天祝白牦牛和麦洼牦牛。
