均衡的稳定性是指让经济系统实现均衡的一个内部操作过程。瓦尔拉在对他的一般均衡解的存在性进行经济意义下的证明时，虽然没有明确指出，实际上已提出了均衡的稳定性问题，即他所说的探索过程。古诺在1838年以及马歇尔在1890年都分别讨论过单一市场上均衡的稳定性问题，希克斯(1939)和萨缪尔森(1941)属于第一次严格地提出并研究稳定性问题的人。1958年以后，关于一般均衡稳定性的研究论文才逐渐增多。
