用以表示世界时的高精度时计。是天文航海的主要工具之一。古代航海船舶除利用天文方法确定时间外，还用过火时计、水时计等。中国泉州湾出土宋代古船上就有水时计遗物。第一台天文钟是英国人J.哈里森1735年制成的，为机械天文钟，铜木结构，重65磅（见图）。他制作了四台天文钟，1761年制成的第四台才达合格标准，体积缩为普通怀表的两倍。这四台钟均保存在英国伦敦国家博物馆。有了天文钟，就可以用时间法求船舶在海上的经度位置。1929年出现的石英天文钟，结构简单，走时准确，正逐渐取代机械天文钟。天文钟时与世界时之差可根据授时台发播的无线电时号确定。
