张柬之(625~706)

    中国唐代宰相,以主谋迫使武则天退位而知名。字孟将。襄州襄阳(今湖北襄樊襄阳)人。登进士第  。永昌元年(689),举贤良科,对策第一。武周时,历任荆州大都督府长史、宰相。长安四年(704),以夏官(兵部)侍郎同凤阁鸾台平章事(即同中书门下平章事)。这时,武则天已病,宠臣张昌宗、张易之侍疾在侧,弄权用事。柬之与另一宰相崔玄等人密谋除二张。神龙元年(705)正月,柬之等率羽林兵500余人,迎太子(先被废黜的唐中宗李显于7年前立为太子)由玄武门入宫,斩易之、昌宗,迫武则天传位太子。二月,恢复唐国号。柬之进位夏官尚书、中书令,与崔玄、敬晖等并为宰相。但武氏家族武三思等及其羽党仍当权用事,他们勾结韦皇后,谮毁柬之等。同年五月,封张柬之为汉阳王,同时罢相。柬之自请养病返襄州,乃出为襄州刺史。次年六月,贬新州司马。至新州,忧愤病死。
