系统中状态变量不是常量的定常状态。定常状态指系统从初始状态开始随时间演进而进入的终态。非平衡态就是除平衡态以外的定常状态,包括周期运动状态(即振荡态)、概周期状态（即遍历态）以及混沌态。平衡态可看作是周期运动中振幅收缩到零的极限情况。与平衡态一样，非平衡态也有稳定和不稳定两类。狭义的非平衡态指稳定的非平衡态。在动态系统中稳定的定常状态称为系统的吸引子。除混沌态以外的稳定定常状态称为平庸吸引子，而奇异吸引子则指混沌这种非平衡态。
例如用逻辑斯蒂映射描述生态系统中某一种群数量的动态规律为：
