中国省级少年儿童图书馆,建于1981年12月31日,馆址在长沙市。至1988年底，馆藏书刊48万册，以少年儿童读物及有关教育、教学资料为特色。其中中外文期刊637种、 报纸 111种, 并注意收藏视听资料和智力玩具。全馆工作人员55人,其中高级专业技术职务者1人，中级专业技术职务者12人。分采编、阅览、活动、辅导 4个业务部门。馆舍面积 11000平方米。设低幼儿童、小学生、中学生、少儿工作者、青少年自学 5个阅览室和视听室、智力玩具室。有阅览座位650个，持证读者1.5万人，平均每天接待读者 600人次。图书馆根据少年儿童的特点，经常组织小读者开展多种形式的读书活动，如书评会、作品欣赏会、故事会、报告会、与作家或科学家见面会以及各种智力竞赛，并举办书法、绘画、微电脑、科学育儿等各种培训班。对失学、失足、弱智、残疾儿童及边远地区的儿童，采取送书、送活动上门或邮寄借书等方法为他们服务。充分利用书刊资料对广大少年儿童进行德、智、体、美方面的教育，培养他们成为有理想、 有道德、 有文化、有纪律的新人。该图书馆1982年被文化部授予全国少年儿童图书馆先进集体称号。1982～1990年连续 8年被评为全国"红领巾读书读报奖章活动"组织指导先进单位。1990年被文化部通报表彰为精神文明建设先进集体。该馆还办有《少年儿童图书馆》季刊(1982～1988年称为《少图书苑》)。
